The
Dorcas Society is a non-denominational charitable, literary,
social, historic nonprofit organization. It was founded by Kate Douglas
Wiggin, our first Honorary President, on November 23, 1897. It is
named after Dorcas of the Bible who after being raised from the dead,
by Peter, did charitable works, such as sewing coats and garments
for the poor. |
Much of our
continuing work is associated with the welfare, maintenance repair and upkeep
of the historic Bar Mills Parish House which has been used by many community
members and organizations. It was a train station purchased and moved with the
help of KDW.
Our Charitable contributions include scholarships to Bonny Eagle High School,
Christmas baskets to shut-ins, donations to families in adversity, plus organizations
including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Opportunity Farm, our local churches
and libraries, York County Shelter for abused women, Ronald McDonald house, Buxton
Rescue Unit, Day One and Visiting Nurse Service.

KDW's philanthropic
vision and spirit lives on. KDW created and supported the Dorcas Society through
the Annual Dorcas Fair, performances of the
play "The Old Peabody Pew" at
Tory HIll Church (1stSunday
in December
annually), her own reading, performances, apron sales and other events
to raise money. Our Multi generational group is always accepting new members
to help with
our work. |
